And here are some discharge precautions that you need to pay attention after having Korea Two Jaw Surgery! 

FACIAL SWELLING (degree of swelling can vary by individual)

  • After discharge, hot/ice pack massage will not be done.
  • Big swollen areas usually begin to subside after 1-2 weeks. Over a 1 month period, swelling will move through the chin to the bottom of the neck.
  • Swollen areas between the muscle will start to subside after 2-3 months and facial outline will begin to appear.
  • During recovery, if any subsequent pain or swelling occurs, please contact the clinic immediately. Swelling will move through the chin to the bottom of the neck.
  • This is the normal swelling disappearing process and should not be worried about.
  • While healing, if any subsequent pain or swelling occurs please contact the clinic immediately.

FACE WASHING AND SHOWER
  • Saunas and bathhouses are prohibited for 4 weeks.
  • Cheekbone reduction patients, hair washing can be started after the first postoperative visit and stitch removal.
  • Hair washing is possible after putting waterproof bandage on the surgical areas.
  • Tape under the chin can be removed 2-3 days after surgery while showering. Tape on the forehead can also be removed 2~3 days after surgery.
  • Face washing is possible. However if swelling remains, please do not apply pressure and wash face gently. (Facial massages are prohibited).
  • Light shower and hair washing is possible 1-2 days after surgery.
  • Hair washing should be gently done standing while keeping the head up under supervised care.

DIET
  • The day after surgery, liquid food diet can start.
  • Fruits should be blended with the seeds removed. Be sure no solid parts remain after blending.
  • Carbonated drinks and coffee are allowed after 6 weeks. Alcohol and smoking is prohibited for at least 6 weeks after surgery.
  • After the first postoperative visit, wires will be removed and mouth opening exercise (physical therapy) will be started.
  • Rice gruel, soup, soy milk, dairy products, fruit juice, beef bone stock and foods that are not spicy, salty are allowed.
  • Non-solid and non-greasy varieties of soups are allowed.
  • Starting the 2nd week. Rice porridge, tofu, steamed eggs and similar easy to digest foods are allowed. (Depending on the surgery the duration could be 16 days) Rice and soft food is allowed 4 weeks after surgery. Rice rolls, apples, pears-similar fruits, soft chicken breast and similar foods can be eaten 2 months after surgery.
  • Peanuts, radishes and other crunchy/chewy foods can be eaten 3 months after surgery.

TOOTH BRUSHING AND MOUTHWASH (Hexidine mouthwash should be mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio)

  • Stitches in the mouth can rupture so never make chewing motions while rinsing.
  • Use Hexidine mouthwash while tooth brushing. Toothpaste can be used two weeks after stitch removal.
  • Tooth brushing is recommended to be done with a children’s toothbrush (soft and short bristles). However, a normal toothbrush can also be used. Tooth brushing should be done very gently, avoiding the gums and softly between the teeth and wires.


SLEEPING

  • In case of swelling remaining, and before the first postoperative visit the body should be raised 15 degrees while sleeping. This aids in comfortable breathing and swelling reduction. 
  • 2-3 cushions, pillows,blankets placed on the back while sleeping is recommended.
  • When breathing becomes comfortable, sleeping normally is possible. While sleeping, be careful the face is not compressed on a pillow. Please use a neck pillow.



STUFFY NOSE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Blowing your nose is prohibited for 4 weeks after surgery.
  • 7-10 days after surgery, blood from the nasal cavity can come out while mouth washing.
  • This is a normal part of the healing process and should not be worried about.
  • If the nose becomes extremely stuffy use a wet cotton swab to clean the inside of the nose. Then, spray Otrivin inside each nostril.
** Otrivin is available without prescription. Otrivin should be used in 12 hour intervals and 7 days maximum. If Otrivin is used for more than one week, side effects such as inflammation, bleeding, swelling, dryness, headache,
fever can occur.


PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION

  • Prescription medication is taken for one week. No further prescription will be given.
  • If pain persists in the surgical area after one week, a prescription painkiller (Tylenol syrup) will be taken once. If pain continues purchase Carol-F syrup from the pharmacy and take as instructed. (1 dosage amount) The prescribed antibiotic (Cefaclor) can cause diarrhea-like symptoms.
  • If diarrhea persists more than 5 times a day you feel abdominal pains, contact the clinic. When symptoms subside resume taking medication.
  • Keep in mind that diarrhea can also be caused by excessive dairy consumption.


OTHER PRECAUTIONS

  • 3 weeks after discharge, mouth opening practice should be actively done to prevent frog mouth symptoms. (You may experience discomfort in muscle movement, this will improve over time, mouth opening should be consistently done for 3~6 months.)
  • Often use of the lip and facial muscles aids in swelling reduction and muscle recovery.
  • Light walking and similar activity is recommended. Intense activity is possible after one month.
